Until I Die

Until I Die by Amy Plum
Release Date ~ 5/8/12
Format ~ ARC
Publisher ~ Harper Teen
Source ~ Swapped
Purchase: The Book Depository
Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.
As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.
In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series.
Kate and her zombie-angel boyfriend, Vincent return in the sequel to Amy Plum's bestselling debut, Die for Me, which in my mind was a good, solid debut that was lacking in some departments. Besides the debut part, that would be a pretty good way to describe Until I Die as well.

I thought sequels were supposed to be about the problems the characters face getting bigger, and everything becoming more intense. Until I Die was the exact opposite. For the first 275 pages all that ever really happened was Kate and Vincent worrying about each-other. However, the climax was heart-wrenching and just plan epic. I feel like  that if Plum could clock in a full 300 pages of interesting content, she could be a gem.

The only thing that I can think of off the top of my head that improved from Die for Me was the character development. I felt like I got to know and care about Kate more in Until I Die and we got to hear more and Vincent's past. They also introduced a very new and awesome villain that had me super scared!

The settings in Plum's books are always very lush and detailed. Being set in Paris gives her the advantage of one minute getting to be in the rich and colorful streets of downtown Paris, and the next in a dark and dingy allies.

Until I Die was overall a fun read, but in my eyes it didn't live up to its full potential.
Cover Comments: I love how practically everything is blue! The old Victorian (at least I THINK they're Victorian) buildings are a nice touch!

  2. I still haven't read the first one in this series. My brother bought me it for my birthday but I've had so many books to read and review that I haven't gotten round to it still! Looking forward to being able to read the two together now. Glad to hear that the second on is good too!

  11. I just read the first in this series and it didn't quite live up to all the hype for me. I was hoping the sequel would get better but it sounds like more of the same. Although I am curious about the heartbreaking part. I'll still probably end up reading this one.

  16. So, what I got from this review is that this sequel is definitely one worth reading. Which means it is added to my list! I like that it's set in Paris, too. Sets it apart even more from other books.

  22. This book features a lot about Vincent and Kate trying to make their relationship work despite their unique differences. Kate is as realistic and level headed as ever, and this is one of the main reasons that I enjoy this series. She isn't making rash decisions, she thinks about things in full, and she isn't a whiny helpless little girl. (Thank you Amy Plum for writing a character like this.) Vincent isn't anything to be scoffed at either. He and his family of revenants are always interesting, if not charming, to read about. He's got some of the best brothers a guy could ever have, even if they might be a little flirtatious (innocently, I think) at times.

Kate still isn't going to take a backseat in this story and she works to find out what she can in order to make life better for Vincent, and in turn herself. While this comes with the expected danger, its danger is enticing and thrilling all at the same time. The mythology of the revenants is something I would love to know even more of, I'm with Kate on that one. This is truly a love story all about doing the right things and whatever it takes to keep that love together.
