Summary: My wish
is to fall
cranium over Converse
in dizzy, daydream-worthy
love.

When her parents split, Marcie is dragged from Idaho to a famiy summerhouse in New Hampshire. She leaves behind her friends, a group of freaks and geeks called the Leftovers, including her emo-rocker boyfriend, and her father.

By the time Labor Day rolls around, Marcie suspects this "vacation" has become permanent. She starts at a new school where a cute boy brings her breakfast and a new romance heats up. But understanding love, especially when you've watched your parents' affections end, is elusive. What does it feel like, really? can you even know it until you've lost it?

Love and Leftovers is a beautifully written story of one girl’s journey navigating family, friends, and love, and a compelling and sexy read that teens will gobble up whole.

My review: I don't usually read books that are all about romances. But hey, this one looked interesting, it was written in verse, and I decided I'd give it a try!
This book looks on the outside like your normal, contemporary teen romance. But don't be fooled! This book deals with important things like family, friends, AND romantic relationships. More importantly, it deals with which ones should take priority. It's something that I wish I saw more of in YA, because often once the heroine falls in love, she throws everything else by the wayside. This book shows how it SHOULD be.
I wasn't so sure how verse would work out, but it turned out great! The verse was a compelling and dynamic way to tell the story. Here's lemme try to write about it in verse:
Love and Leftovers was a
interesting,
thoughtful,
realistic,
it grabbed me by the neck and wouldn't let me go.
Now here's my major bone to pick with Love and Leftovers: For the first 300 pages of the book, I HATED Marcie, because she goes around cheating on her very loyal boyfriend, and then when he ditched her, she acted like it was everybody else's fault! If you wanna be happy, don't cheat! And if you have to cheat, don't blame it on others. Jeez!
Love and Leftovers was a thought-provoking, book about relationships, not just romantic relationships, all kinds.
4/5
Cover Comments: I like this cover, it sums the book up nicely.

  1. Just ordered this book. Wasn't sure if I would like it as it's in verse, as I've never read a book like that, but thought I would give it ago! Glad you liked it! :)

  3. Very interesting review. I had seen this one lately and I was really excited about it. even though you gave it a really good review and the fact that it is in verse intrigues me, your analysis of the MC has me a bit nervous.

  4. I am very curious about this book, mainly because I have never read a YA book in verse. Yeah, it's true that in many books when the heroine falls in love, her love interest is the most important thing in her life and that's I think is really crazy.
As I read your review, the style or genre of book seems little bit similar to The DUFF by Kody Keplinger.

  6. I totally know what you mean about Marcie acting like that. I was irritated too, but I still enjoyed this one for the most part ;o)

  7. I've seen this one around a lot lately. I have to admit, it was the blurb that first caught my attention- not so much the cover. The character's "voice" in the blurb just sound so quirky and unusual. I'm keeping this firmly on my to-read list.

  8. Wow, this sounds like a pretty intense book that covers a whole lot of issues about love. Honestly, I more of a fan of happy contemporaries but I really want to give this one a go. I still have to read Audition which is in verse ;)

  9. It's in verse? Nice. And really? Why would you blame others for your mistakes. I agree. Marcie is stupid.
