Summary: High school senior Justina Griffith was never the girl who dreamed of going to prom. Designer dresses and strappy heels? Not her thing. So she never expected her best friend, Ian Clark, to ask her.
Ian, who always passed her the baseball bat handle first.
Ian, who knew exactly when she needed red licorice.
Ian, who promised her the most amazing night at prom.
And then ditched her.
Now, as the sun rises over her small town, and with only the help of some opinionated ladies at the 7-Eleven, Justina must piece together — stain by stain on her thrift-store dress — exactly how she ended up dateless. A three-legged Chihuahua was involved. Along with a demolition derby-ready Cadillac. And there was that incident at the tattoo parlor. Plus the flying leap from Brian Sontag's moving car...
But to get the whole story, Justina will have to face the boy who ditched her. And discover if losing out at prom can ultimately lead to true love.
Filled with humor, charm, and romance, Ditched: A Love Story by debut novelist Robin Mellom will have readers dreaming of love on their own prom nights.
My Review: When I read the summary, this book looked like a quick and light contemporary, that was not to be...
I found that this book didn't have a very well fleshed-out plot. It seemed like a bunch of gossip piled into a 288 page book. As I am a guy, my reaction might be different then the reactions of the gender this novel was aimed at: girls. I have no problem with books that have no action, but I needed something to be happening then a bunch of swooning, complaining mumble-jumble.
It seems like I'm complaining about this book a ton... so why didn't I give it a worse rating? Because of Justina's narrative. You couldn't help but start cracking up. She was RIDICULOUS, but oh so hilarious. She was also quite naive, so much that you couldn't help but feel sorry for her, as everything that could go wrong was going wrong.

This is me. This book was too confusing, and just plain BORING, I wanted to give up and stop reading, but since it was only 288 pages I decided to plow through it. It didn't get any better.

I didn't hate Ditched, but it was nothing like what I hoped for.

  3. That picture was funny! I was looking forward to this so I'm sad to hear it is slow. It sounds like everything going wrong with her might be fun still. I'll probably just grab it at the library sometimes. No rush now but might give it a try.

  4. Being a female I thought this book was cute. Nothing earth shattering, but I didn't think it was boring. I am in total agreement with you, Justina's voice was the best part of the book.

  15. Mmm...I know what it feels like to be "ditched!" And at least you laughed while you read it. Haven't had the chance to pick it up yet. Maybe I'll pick it up at the library first and then decide. I don't like "ditching" a book altogether until I've read it myself. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I guess this is a prime example of how an engaging character can make up for a confusing plot? =)
